Supernatural, ‘nough said

Supernatural is easily one of the best TV shows ever created. It has been nominated and even won numerous awards. It has gained the cult level and has a very loyal fan base. It has its own merchandise, spin-off series, and even a long list of novels. This show deserves all that it has, and much more.

Supernatural is a TV show that follows two brothers Dean (Jensen Ackles) and Sam Winchester (Jared Padalecki) who investigate supernatural activity and stop what ever is causing it. This includes anything from ghosts, vampires, demon’s,witches, the list really goes on. The driving force behind this show is not the hunting, but the characters themselves.

Dean Winchester played by Jensen Ackles is my favorite character of this show for several reasons. He is a bad ass but there is more to it then that, he is very protective of the ones he cares about. He is big into family, saving people, and if he can kick some ass doing it then that is bonus points for him. He loves his car and rock music. He loves drinking and women but at the end of the day, nothing gets in the way of the job, except maybe family.

Sam Winchester played by Jared Padalecki is the younger brother of Dean. Sam has always wanted to stay as far away from hunting as possible and continues to resist it through out the series. He is highly intelligent and caring. He is the brains behind Dean’s brawn a lot of the time. Sometimes Sam’s drive to do the job no matter the price often gives him tunnel vision and often requires someone to get him back on track.

Between these two they are feared and/or respected by all who are supernatural and even their fellow hunters.

Season 1:

This season opens up showing the tragic events of the brothers childhood when a yellow eyed demon kills their mother and burns their childhood home down. Now jump to current times and Sam is at college having a wonderful life when his older brother Dean shows up and tells him that his father has gone missing on a “hunting” trip. Sam and Dean go out to investigate their dad’s last location. Upon finding no leads to their dad’s whereabouts Sam goes back to college and leaves it up to Dean to find their dad. Unfortunately the yellow eyed demon attacks again and kills Sam’s girlfriend. Now wanting vengeance Sam joins Dean on the quest to find their Dad and in the process hunt anything that needs hunting. During their travels Sam is gaining psychic abilities that’s source is unknown. They eventually catch up to their dad and find a gun that can kill any demon. After a battle with the yellow eyed demon leads to Dean being severally injured and Sam and his dad in a car accident the season ends.

Season 2:

The season opens up with Dean in a coma and Sam and his dad in the hospital with minor injuries. The brothers dad makes a deal with the yellow eyed demon to spare Dean’s life in return for taking his. The yellow eyed demon agrees and the brothers mourn their fathers loss. It is revealed that the yellow eyed demon is responsible for Sam’s psychic powers. The demon’s grand scheme leads to Sam’s death. Dean suffering the loss of all his family leads him to make a deal with a demon that in return for his soul in one year, Sam gets to live. The yellow eyed demon opens a portal to hell releasing countless demons but the brothers manage to stop the demon and close the portal.

Season 3:

This season focuses primarily on the brothers attempting to save Dean from his deal. Unfortunately they are ultimately unsuccessful and Dean is sent to hell.

Season 4:

Dean is brought back from hell by an angel named Castiel in order to assist in halting a powerful demon from breaking the seals holding Lucifer in his prison. This season shows a rift start to appear between the two brothers when Sam starts siding with a “good” demon over Dean. Sam also starts drinking demon blood which is the source of Sam’s psychic abilities. Dean does not agree with either of these choices and the brothers have a falling out. Sam kills the powerful demon out of revenge when he knows that she is the final seal holding Lucifer in his prison. At the same time Sam’s “good” demon betrays Sam and Dean kills her. The season end with Lucifer being let out of his prison.

Season 5:

This season primarily focuses on the fight to stop the apocalyptic fight between Lucifer and Michael the arch angel. The brothers find out that Sam is Lucifer’s vessel and Dean is Michael’s vessel. They also find out that God does not want anything to do with the struggle that is happening now and will not intervene. The two brothers resist this as long as possible but in the end they cannot. Sam lets Lucifer take over his body so that he can trap Lucifer and put him back into his prison. Michael no longer needs a vessel so Dean has to watch his brother fight this fight alone. Sam sacrifices himself to lock Lucifer back into his prison while also damning his soul to be locked up with Lucifer as well. The season end with Dean living a somewhat happy life with an old flame.

Season 6:

This season picks up with Sam making an appearance in Dean’s life and requesting him to help him and some other hunters with a mission. At the same time there is a civil war going on in Heaven due to the events surrounding the failed Apocalypse and Castiel struggles to stop it. Dean learns that Sam was brought back without his soul and Dean makes a deal with Death to fix Sam. Death agrees and adds a mental wall to prevent Sam from remembering his time in hell. Castiel makes a radical move by opening a portal to purgatory to absorb souls so that he can claim himself God and restore order to Heaven.

Season 7:

This season picks up with Castiel going around punishing all the wrongdoers in the world but quickly realizes that he has made a mistake. He absorbed the Leviathans that were put into purgatory by God so that humans could have the earth and that the Leviathans are breaking free from him. When the Leviathans break free they quickly set up a grand scheme to turn humans into the perfect food source. Dean and Sam are hard pressed to defeat the Leviathans due to them not having any weaknesses except Borax. Castiel tries to help fix his mistake and in the process Dean and Castiel manage to stop the Leviathan threat but are sent to purgatory with the Leviathan leader.  Season 7 ends with Sam being left alone to pick up the peaces that are left after the final pieces.

Season 8:

This season picks up a year after the events of the previous season. A battered Dean appears with a friendly vampire that does not attack humans. Dean quickly finds Sam only to find that Sam has lived a happy life for the past year and had made no attempt to free Dean from purgatory. This season primarily focuses on the completing the tasks that are required by the Demon Tablet to close the gates of hell once and for all. While the brothers are doing this Castiel who managed to get out of purgatory on his own works on fixing heaven that is still struggling with the civil war. Castiel is tricked by an angel that says that the tasks he is completing will close the gates of heaven but instead it makes all the angels fall from heaven. The season ends with the brothers not closing the gates of hell due to it requiring Sam dying and the angels falling from heaven.

This show is very character driven. The things that the characters are put through time and time again really drive this show. The struggle between the brother’s drive to keep fighting and to stop fighting because the price is too high is very captivating. The action is awesome with new threats popping up when least expected. This show will surely keep you interested each and every season.

The show is currently on break right now with the 9th season returning this fall. There will at least be a 10th season as well due to the lead actors signing a contract for the 9th and 10th season at the same time.
